Don’t accept the first thing you are offered
Usually the first thing that the company offer is not the best thing. The company expect you to have negotiation with them even though the competition is intense. You may not able to negotiate the same salary that you could before the economic turndown but it is still worth to negotiate with the company. I think no one want to feel that their advantages been taken before the start of the job.
Don’t mention salary before the organization makes you an offer
The suitable time to talk about salary is when the organization offer a position for you. Any talk about salary before offer is just talk. You can do some research about the salary that offered to their employee before the negotiation of salary. However, you can state a range of your salary during the interview to show that you are a flexible person that can compromise to that range of salary.
Don’t volunteer what you want in term of salary
The most basic rule in salary negotiation is that first person who mention salary lose. This is because it will put other person in stronger position. Example, when you state that you want to have the job with monthly salary of RM 5000, then the manager will not likely to offer you with salary more than RM 5000. Therefore, it is better not to expose any unnecessary information because it will affect your salary negotiation.
Don’t overlook benefits as part of the total compensation package
In some cases, that the additional benefit that offered by the organization will balance out low salary. Try to imagine that you have a job with salary of RM 20,000 but without any additional benefit like medical compensation, the company may not responsible for your safety if you injured during your work. Don’t always see low salary as disadvantages where it is almost the same as the job with high salary and no additional benefit.
