Deciding if correcting them is important enough
Ask yourself whether you are 100% correct before you correcting someone. Then, is it really necessary to correct that person and will there any major changes occur if you don’t correct that person? So how to decide if it is really matter? Take the ego out of it. If the person is just simply wrong about a statistic or incorrect view will have not much impact to the real world. However, if they are going to act based on the incorrect information that may result in harm to them, you or someone else, then you need to step up and correct them.
Ask why they come to their conclusion
The conclusion here means the incorrect conclusion they made. Don’t just straight away tell them that the information they have was incorrect but try to understand why they believe the information is correct. If asked in correct tones, it will not look like you are judging them but you are curious to know why they believe the information is correct. Asking “why” might give you a chance to see whether you are wrong or any information that you misunderstood as wrong information. Other than just knowing what other think about, you also can push forward the conversation between you and your colleague and improve your relationship.
Give them option to consider other conclusions
As you tell them that their decision or information is incorrect, provide other correct option for them to choose with. People will be more willing to accept new option or information if there are other potion for them to choose with. Try to use the” why” question follow with other option to let others know that you are helping them to clarifying their information instead of just telling them it is incorrect information. Other than that, people will be more willing to accept the option if you can explain why other option is better. By engaging in a conversation portraying curiosity than attacking stance, you will encourage a more positive and constructive conversation.
